The sun may be shining, but TV is going dark! June offers many exciting dramas to look forward to starting with HBO’s Euphoria (No. 1). Zendaya leads the teen drama as a 17-year-old recovering drug addict. In this American adaptation of the original Israeli series, the show observes a group of high school students as they navigate love and relationships in a world of sex, drugs, trauma, and social media.
Next up, director, Nicolas Winding Refn (Drive) brings a new crime drama to Prime Video. Too Old to Die Young (No. 2) tells the story of a grieving police officer (Miles Teller) who finds himself in the underbelly of Los Angeles where he investigates cartel assassins, the Russian mob, and Yakuza soldiers to name a few. The ten, violent episodes averaging 90 minutes in length will be released for bingeing on the 14th. Meanwhile, the world of crime continues with City on a Hill (No. 5). Producers, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon take us back to 1990s Boston where the series follows an assistant district attorney and a corrupt FBI veteran who come together to take on the city’s entire criminal justice system.
If a soapy drama is what you’re looking for, try Grand Hotel (No. 3). The Eva Longoria-produced series based on the Spanish telenovela, Gran Hotel, checks in to ABC on the 17th. Set in the last family-owned hotel in Miami Beach, scandals and secrets await to be unraveled as wealthy guests bask in luxury.
Lastly, AMC adds more monsters to its roster with new supernatural horror, NOS4A2 (No. 4). When a young woman discovers she has a dangerous gift, it threatens the world of an immortal serial killer who has been feeding off of children’s souls. The series based on the Joe Hill novel will make its television debut on June 2nd.
Several fan-favorites return next month as two big shows premiere on the 5th. Anthology series, Black Mirror (No. 1), returns to Netflix with a fifth season and three new stories. Miley Cyrus plays a key role in the upcoming season as a performer who appears to have undergone a transformation to further her fame. Additionally, “June” returns in June with the third season of Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale (No. 4). After last season’s intense cliffhanger, our badass handmaid is ready to get Hannah out of Gilead in hopes of taking down the regime in the process.
Meanwhile, Netflix will debut the second season of DARK (No. 2) on the 21st. The German thriller carries on from Season 1 with Jonas finding himself trapped in the future, trying to return to the year 2020 while his friends attempt to uncover the mysteries of their hometown. Another foreign-language series, Brazilian original 3% comes in at No. 5 with a new season on the 7th. The upcoming episodes will also explore yet another utopian community and introduce us to the world of “The Shell.”
And finally, it comes as no surprise that Big Little Lies (No. 3) rounds out the month’s anticipation report! The critically acclaimed series returns on the 9th to handle the aftermath and deception of the first season’s explosive finale. The Monterey Five struggle to keep up with all their lies while they deal with second grade, local rivalries, and Perry’s mother -- played by the one and only Meryl Streep.
