ANTICIPATION REPORT: Genre, Action, and Psychological Thrillers Dominate July Programming

These 5 new and returning shows are what users are following and looking forward to in July. HBO/Hulu/TheCW/AT-X

Network programming has been off for more than a month now, but basic cable, premium, and streaming providers are here to fill the void when it comes to new and returning TV shows. With that being said, it’s going to be a July filled with a wide variety of offerings. On the debut front, Hulu leads the way with its long-anticipated Stephen King/J.J. Abrams horror anthology Castle Rock. Named after Castle Rock, Maine, one of King’s favorite venues, the show explores a vast array of some of the author’s best works. The location has been the setting of It, Cujo, and The Shawshank Redemption so pay attention to all the references. On July 8th, HBO will launch Sharp Objects. The star-studded miniseries based on the novel by Gillian Flynn (Gone Girl) and led by Amy Adams, follows a woman who returns to her small Missouri town to explore her own fraught past and help solve the murder of two young girls.

The third most anticipated series debuting in July is The Outpost from The CW. The Outpost is a fantasy adventure series that sees the lone survivor of an extinct tribe seek vengeance against those who killed her family. Following The Outpost in the genre vein, is the anime Angels of Death in the fourth position on our report. Steeped in horror trappings, the show follows a young woman who has lost her memory as she battles foes in an abandoned building. Lastly, in fifth position is Sacred Games dropping on Netflix on July 6th. Sacred Games is the streaming provider’s first Indian original series. Set in Mumbai and based on the novel of the same name, the show chronicles the journey of an honest police officer as he attempts to save his city from a series of events set off by a criminal overlord.

For returning series, the month of July is flush with exciting content. First up is the Season Six premiere of Orange is the New Black on July 27th. The show signed off last summer with a number of our favorite inmates in terrible peril, so you’ll have to tune-in and binge the entire season to find out how they’ll fare. Coming in at No. 2 it’s the popular anime Attack on Titan. 24 episodes will round out a robust third season that is set to deliver plenty of action. Meanwhile, over on Starz, crime does appear to pay as Power returns for it’s fifth season finding star Omari Hardwick’s Ghost in mourning and out for vengeance.

Finally, in the fourth and fifth seats it’s Suits on USA, followed by Wynonna Earp on SyFy. Suits will look to fill out it’s lawyer roster after the departure of some beloved cast members. Katherine Heigl is joining the cast as a regular. On Syfy, Wynonna Earp promises to deliver “Earpers” a satisfying conclusion to that Season Two cliffhanger, so find out if the premiere earns its stripes on July 20th.

Stick around for our August installment next month when Ozark, Fear the Walking Dead, and Better Call Saul head to the small screen and Amazon debuts it’s long-awaited Jack Ryan series.
