SHOWS ON THE RISE: Viewers Flock To Streaming For August Programming

Streaming took over viewers' watching habits in August. Netflix

With just roughly seven weeks before the official return of the fall TV season, viewers are enjoying the hiatus from their favorite network shows with a bevy of streaming hits from every genre. Up first on our “Shows on the Rise” report this week is Netflix’s latest premiere -- Dear White People, coming in at No. 1 with a rise ratio of 93.2%. Netflix’s other major release last week came in at No. 2 with She-Ra and the Princesses of Power. Irish comedy Derry Girls from Channel 4 hit Netflix streaming on Friday and received a show boost, launching it into the third place position, followed shortly behind by last week’s top earner, Amazon Prime Video’s The Boys, which fell just slightly to No. 4.

Other streaming entries, Canadian comedy Workin’ Moms (No. 5), which benefited from pickup on Netflix, and Hulu’s horror anthology Light as a Feather (No. 7) also found top 10 placement this week, alongside the final season of Orange Is the New Black, falling from No. 2 to No. 9, as well as South Korean series My First First Love (No. 10).

This week will bring the ‘80s and ‘90s nostalgia back to the small screen, as the cast of Beverly Hills, 90210 returns with the reboot of BH90210 and GLOW heads back to Netflix. Will viewers want to take the leap back to the past? We will reveal the results next Monday.

DID YOU KNOW? Viewers celebrated the official conclusion of some of their favorite series this past week. Jane the Virgin (No. 14) and iZombie (No. 15) both saw a lift in their final episodes of their respective series and Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD (No. 16) and Euphoria (No. 19) also netted gains in their season finales.

*Methodology: Every week, millions of viewers around the world use TV Time to track their favorite series. “Shows on the Rise” is calculated by determining the week-over-week growth in episodes watched for a given program.

Note: The network displayed is the network where the show first aired (e.g. “Friends” on NBC).
