The way this season began, I was enthusiastic that the writers would add more serialization to the series. We did get that though it was stealthy serialization disguised as standalone episodes. It was quite impressive when viewing the season as a whole, but underwhelming when considering each episode individually. Aside from the first couple episodes, there was never any sense of a looming threat to Equestria all season until these last couple episodes.

I get that these last two episodes were all about Twilight, but that unfortunately relegated the other ponies almost to the point that they functioned more as background characters. As the show emphasizes, My Little Pony is principally about the power of friendship, as was this episode, so it would've been nice if at least a B-plot or C-plot would've been devoted to giving Pinkie Pie, Fluttershy, Apple Jack, Rarity, Rainbow Dash and Spike (and even their pets) something to do throughout the episode rather than just getting captured and saved by Twilight before the climax.

That said, I really liked this finale. These episode used Discord more effectively than it ever has and finally made him as likable as he is chaotic. Twilight's concern with being a lame duck princess was effective was a concern that played throughout the season and it was great to see that resolved in this episode, and her action scenes were pretty thrilling and beautifully animated. It actually reminded me a bit of the fight animation used on Dragon Ball Z, although thankfully far less plodding.

I did love seeing so many of the guest and recurring ponies return, however briefly, in the episode.

Looking forward to season five.
