I see a lot of people complain about Starlight's backstory being too simple, weak and not too thought-through. But I wonder if those people realized that there is more than meets the eye and the plot. It is really that Starlight's motive connection is made not by one line, but by two.

I see a lot of people complain about Starlight's backstory being too simple, weak and not too thought-through. But I wonder if those people realized that there is more than meets the eye and the plot. It is really that Starlight's motive connection is made not by one line, but by two.

[1] Starlight's backstory is not what caused her revenge against Twilight, but it CAUSED THE CAUSE. In the flashback, Starlight saw that Sunburst became a powerful unicorn and got sent to Canterlot. She was heartbroken and furious that his newly-found special talent made him so special that everyone pushed him to become better, and thus sent him away. This concept of being "special" is what quite frankly and literally tore them apart. Ever since then, she HATES the idea of being special, and sees it as a threat that breaks friendly bonds. With this view in mind, in time, she made a community where nopony is "special": that everypony is "equal". This community is built around her view of friendship, that because everypony is equal, no one's "specialty" will tear apart the bonds of friendship, just as what happened in her childhood.

[2] And then - AND THEN - we fast forward to the Season 5 Premiere, and the Mane Six waltz in, called by The Map, and brought back individuality to the community that Starlight built. Everypony is unique and special again! And Starlight was there, seeing the Mane Six tear her world of equality apart before her. That society of equality was dear to her heart, and because the Mane Six took it away, she seeks to take THEIR bond away. So we fast forward again to this Season Finale, and Starlight does just that, by altering the moment that brought their destinies together, so that their friendship wouldn't exist. THIS is her Season Finale motivation, not the backstory that people so accuse as weak. Also, she was not aware of the ensuing Butterfly Effect of destruction she caused by her actions, and it is not even her very motive. She only seeks to stop the Mane Six's friendship from ever happening, but she did not know that it would cause a flurry of Bad Futures, one of which Twilight showed her as she dragged Starlight into the time loop. This marked her redemption point, and her start of renewed view of friendship.

Another accusation that people make about this backstory is that it's too simple, and that they demand complexity. But, honestly, thinking of a more complex reason will not be as effective because the complexity means that the central message of friendship gets gradually lost. The kids (the TARGET demographic) need to learn this message, and they must learn it in a straightforward manner. Go too complex in sending this message and you might end up justifying Starlight's actions! And that is not okay at all. So this backstory will suffice. If you ask me, the entire background is not simple at all. Look at the top paragraphs!

I'm looking forward to the new direction that the show is taking. The learner now becomes the teacher, and we have a new learner to see grow, and I'll be there in Season 6 seeing this development happen.
Here's to friendship!

This season final really left me perplexed.. It doesn't really make sense the whole reason cause Starlight Glimmer hates cutie marks and all..also why with such a potential she didn't went to Canterlot Academy too? What brought her to be what she is and to feel such grunge against friendship should have needed a stronger reason in my humble advice. She turned upside down the world for such a horrible and childish reason and changed her mind that quickly??? After all that hasty? Hasbro give the writers more time to think worthy episodes, the show is decaying.
