p0is0n yes sir...
they are called "Saxon Chronicles" writen by Bernard Cornwell, great autor by the way, great romances with perfect historical background. usually he gets england's important historical periods. "the last kingdom" is the name of the first book (episode 1-4 from season 1)...
is followed by "the pale horseman"(5-8 season 1) "lords of the north" (1-4 season 2) "sword song"(5-8 season 2) ... so far there are 10 books, but there is an 11ยฐ coming.
they are pretty accurate, because although it is a remote time, since alfred was a really cult king he liked to keep everything writen, he was an intelectual, and he left an pretty detailed biography writen by brother Asser (he apeared on season 1) wich is the main information source Cornwell used.

I really recomend the books, great fiction and great historycal facts, they are awesome. his battle descriptiom are pretty accurate, along with cultural and religious background.
he is my personal favorite autor. and this series for me is his masterpiece.

He sickens me. Then again so many in power are driven by their self serving, narcissistic attitudes. Watching this series I never understood how he managed to remain in power...he seems so fragile and delicate.

Power hungry. That's what he is. And he will kill everyone who even remotely threatens that ๐Ÿ˜ก

Math Uthred didn't question the ransom simply because he had his plan in mind, with which there would have been no ransom to be paid anyway.

nycaxl in this specific event, i think(this is a me thinking as an 8 century king, on a semi-barbarian world almost taken by vikings, not the pacifist me) he needs to execute Odda, treason is treason, i dont know, but i tend to think that relentless kigs tend to have better results. of course sometimes a king may be forgiving, but on this specific case, he was very clear and direct with his orders... we tend to claim for mercy cuz of the happy outcome (actually, not happy but very convenient towards the saxons) but it does not change the fact that he has to pay...

but anyway, Alfred was a forgiving king, i didnt like the whole situatiom cause it was made by the executive producers for the drama, and this never happened on the books, and when similar things happen, alfred asks for money for the church and prayers and let the person live... but i could understand his attitude.

i dont know if you are familiar with game of thrones, and if you look to spme characters like: Stannis Baratheon, Twin Lannister, even Eddard Stark would have had the same decision on the situation, and although i dont have any sympaty towards them and theyr acts (same with Alfred) i dont question theyr legitimacy, results and ruling skills.

serial-watcher man, i'm really happy you are going to read the books, i think they're gold.

And i see wat you mean, Alfred is an bastard towards Uhtred, and sometimes really let us down to the point we almost completely lose our respect to him.
ant exactly as you said about the producers view, because of the emotional charge they gave Odda on the series and specially on this episode, we tend to see him as a martyr, and his beliefs as the purest. but as i said, its not that simple

Math yes I understand where you're coming from I think it's about how the characters are portrayed by the producers too. When Odda gave his reasoning you really got a feeling of the sacrifices others had made and I think he was completely right in doing what he did. He himself had given so much up to seeve Alfred and served him with his heart and soul. The hurt in his eyes was seen too when he realised and what we all realised would happen to Wessex and the whole of England if Alfred had paid. Yes, Alfred is wise and sharp, but his last few decisions have really let him down in terms of what the viewers actually saw him to be.

I've actually just ordered the books ๐Ÿ˜‚ I can't wait to read them. I guess they'll give a deeper insight into this. CAN'T WAIT

serial-watcher i'm not really sure if i could tell how a kig should act... see, i dont like him either, and his methods and his church really annoys me, but he is smart, and except when concerning Uhtred (cause he is pagan) he tends to be fair and coherent.

the thing about the ramson, we got Odda's point of view, and it kind if makes sense since Odda is an honorable man, but pay attention to Aethelwould part on the hole play, he kinda incentive odda to go foward, you think he would do that if he believed Alfred would have a chance to keep the throne with that outcome? he doesnt care for england, he wants to be king, even if was an siegfried puppet. You dont see Uhtred(the closest exemple of honorable man) questionig his option of paying the danes... Actually, since the series cant give us the thougts and the subjetive fellings of Uhtred, its hard for us to see that he actually agrees with Alfred that he doesn have a choice but to pay (i really recomend the books for you to see deeper) because when reading, i really could understand the problematic situation of let her die, and the end of the line situation Alfred and Wessex had gotten into.

Its a hard choice, but i repeat again, we only tend to see that alfred made the last one cause we are laed to it because of Odda.
if you look historically, these ransons were cultural, and more often than not, nobles would pay when they had to.

Math he banished Uhtred, Uhtred saves Wessex AGAIN he puts his family's needs before his kingdom so many poor people lost their loved ones fighting for him yet he can't give his own sacrifice he was prepared to make his people pay for their own damnation. I love Aethelfled but still, he's not been acting as a king should so yh ๐Ÿ˜‚

he is not very likeable, but he sure is eficient, otherwise he woudn't be the only saxon kig to be called "the great" along history

Well I think it means a lot that Aethelfled killed Sigefrig in front of her husband because now he realizes that he is the weak one
And also she revenges Erik and, Sigfrig was so selfish because he looked like to love his brother more than everything but he didn't understand his love for Aethelfled, so when he said to Erik its your fault if I killed you its actually not

CoffeeAddict True, I think he's definitely going to regret it because of what Aethelred will try to do next..

AnnaMaria Totally agree, bad timing! Though he may have to regret it as he despises Aethelred. But still honorable of him.

Aethelflaed is so strong and has a free mind. She would actually make a better ruler than her father.
I hope she's pregnant with Erik's child. After they caged her, a happy ending was very unlikely to happen but Erik's death was so sad: he was a great man and they were a great match.
