Wednesday at Hulu 1 seasons Still Running
In a dystopian near-future, the totalitarian and Christian-fundamentalist government of Gilead rules the former United States amidst an ongoing civil war and subjugates women, who are not allowed to work, control money, or even read. Widespread infertility due to environmental contamination has resulted in the conscription of young fertile women—called Handmaids, according to biblical precedent—who are assigned to the homes of the elite, where they must have ritualized sex with the men in order to become pregnant and bear children for those men and their wives.

This show is blatant propaganda, and the 4th episode was total trash, like your taste in media.

triggerwarning do you know that your opinion, just like mine and everyone else's, is personal, then doesn't necessarily correspond to the truth? Do you know that not everyone likes the same things you do? And, uhm, do you know that "taste" is something absolutely personal? Do you know that I really don't care about your unpolitely expressed opinion? You don't like the show? Then go comment (politely, if you can) about something you can give a positive feedback about, cause you're not forced to read positive comments about this show. Keep your negativity away from me.

Wow the Show is Really Different it's kind of traumatising but yet you keep returning for more cause you feel their treated unfair. So wrong in so many ways but yet it could happen to this World. I'd say it's an Amazing Show. Give it a Watch well worth your time.

kismetique Unfortunately, some of those things are fact in real life (genital mutilation, women not allowed to drive or even sex slaves). It's way closer to some's reality then we would like to think.

And the fact that this reality is connected to islam and not christianity doesn't matter to you off course. Even in judaism women have less rights than in christianity but to make show like this with judaism or islam instead of christianity that would be politically incorrect. But would certainly be more realistic than this. Women have nowhere such rights and equality as they do in the wester civilisation (which is based on christian values) and still we somehow buy these nosence only to show how ignorant an easily manipulated we are.

I feel bad from what is realistic and deep this series, I love it. I think it's one of, it really is a masterpiece series dystopian best done so far. Cast exceptionally malatissima incredible history and photography, he holds glued to the screen from the first episode.

Eu recomendo tanto o livro quanto a série.

The book The Tale of Aia, Margaret Atwood, I read to be on my list of books indicated by Chuck Palahniuk. The book is a dystopia where the only fertile women left in the land are kept in a kind of monastery where they are forced to have sex with leaders whose women can not produce, but must be present in coitus, for they can maintain the heirs. With a setting based on the Bible and quite controversial points, the book is a treat for those who like reading and a great volume to think. From what I saw the first episode of the series based on the book, they keep quite closely, including how the protagonist tells the story is intersperses his account with some ironies.

I recommend both the book and the series.

One of my all time favorite books! I've been looking forward to this show since they first announced it last year!

I read Atwood's book ; I watched the film. I'm very happy that Margaret Atwood will be a creative voice in the series.

anna, I am watching because of the book too. In fact, I was just about to ask your very question when I saw your comment here. The book is one of my favorite books of all time! I was looking through some of the comments on the individual episodes and got the impression that many hadn't read the book or didn't even know it existed. I don't even see a lot of comments referencing the book or comparing stuff to the book, just a lot of "oh wow this is a great series," etc. etc. Anyway glad to know there are other viewers that have read the book! :)

I'm really enjoying the departures from the book ... new storylines but true to the novel's spirit.

Ok this series is crazy! She is involved and hallucinating. This dystopia is scary. Really good series I look forward to see more. In the third episode I was particularly shocked and indeed should better not look at it that Trump would give him ideas. .. actors really play well all the human misery of these women is very well shown. Whether one side or the other. IFUP what a slap.

This show is so freakin powerful, so touching, moving and frightening, just a rollercoaster of emotions. And once you start watching this, you'll be horrified to find out that we're actually not that far away from something like this happening around us. Wake up people, we don't need hate or division, we need love and unity.

kismetique Really ? Have you read a newspaper recently ? Are you aware that, as you laugh off the possibility of this dystopian future, the GOP (US Republican party) is passing laws to destroy Planned Parenthood, leaving millions of women with no health care at all ? I am not a "drama queen". I am an informed, thinking citizen and a history scholar.

The Handmaid's Tale

It's unfortunate that an adaptation of Margaret Atwood's dystopian story of women's subjugation feels so frighteningly relevant, but it does give this new Hulu series an extra frisson of importance. (Along with an accompanying burden of expectation: If it's disappointing, it will feel like a particularly sharp failure.) For now, the initial casting and early images look quite promising, and it's hard to imagine Samira Wiley as Moira, Joseph Fiennes as the Commander, and Yvonne Strahovski as Serena Joy could be remotely underwhelming. If nothing else, Elisabeth Moss as Offred promises to be downright thrilling. —

One, if not LA, the most beautiful series of the year!
A despotic series but a scary realism cast then ... many faces noted by Mad Man's Penny, Orange's Poussey is the new black, Chuck's Sara and the wonderful Leftovers Patti!
It seems to me that we are lately spoiled, between Westworld, Taboo, American Gods and the new seasons of other beautiful series!

Okay so why do I hear about this wonder only today? Dystopian and totalitarian version of the USA. We are talking here about religion, the place of men and women and an apocalyptic future, but which seems unfortunately very close to us. I only saw the first episode and I was hit for 1h. Incredible new jewel of Hulu, I really hope this series will work. Personally, what fascinated me in this pilot is the fact that it is strikingly realistic. Very little music, and when there is it is scary. So horrible and at the same time so much possible! One can only imagine what is possible at the moment in 2017. I was really afraid, at times I dared not look at my screen. And can we talk about the cast for a moment? 😱 That beasts of actors I am delighted! In short, go for it. Certainly the climate is anxiety but the beauty of the series makes us forget that very quickly. A real discovery. I look forward to seeing the next

Really looking forward to this. However, having an actress as young as Strahovski is ridiculous. In the books and original mini-series, Serena Joy is a pious middle-aged woman: a GOP wet dream à la Tammy Faye Bakker; a homemaker/gospel singer. Gah. Pretty obvious what the director is doing here: throwing in a young, beautiful blonde into the mix...just 'cause. Ugh. There's no way Strahovski could be better in this role than a multitude of other actresses who are more mature, experienced, and in keeping with Atwood's original vision. That said, Moss, Bledel, Fiennes, and Ann-freakin'-Dowd are PERFECTION.

I think she's great in her roll. Very duplicitous.

I think casting Serena as the same age as June has the potential to amplify Serena's bitter jealousy. I would've preferred an older Serena as well, but hopefully her character will get better developed as the series continues.

I always imagined Serena Joy as Tammy Faye, too. I wonder if they will explore her and her husband's televangelist background.
