SHOWS ON THE RISE: Fantasy And Genre Hit Big With Fans

South Korean series, "Kingdom," takes the No. 1 slot this week. Netflix

Magic and the supernatural became a strong force this past week as Netflix original, Kingdom, took the No. 1 position on our "Shows on the Rise" report. The South Korean series, which follows a prince’s mission to end a mysterious plague only to discover a zombie epidemic, earned a rise ratio of 99.90% after its six-episode release on January 25th. The CW continued the enchanted trend with its witchy reboot of Charmed (No. 4) and The Originals spin-off, Legacies (No 5); both returning in their mid-season premieres. Meanwhile, the mystical mermaids of Freeform’s Siren (No. 6) made a splash in the show’s second season premiere, and cult-series, The Magicians (No. 8), reignited fans’ love of the series with a new, fourth season.

Outside the magical realm, CBS hit reality series, Celebrity Big Brother (No. 2), had a huge comeback with twelve new houseguests, while Netflix continued to deliver the goods. Fans bid “farewell’ to Tina Fey comedy, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (No. 3) with six final episodes, and animated-series, Carmen Sandiego (No. 7), finally staked its claim after the series’ January 18th debut.

With TNT’s long-awaited premiere of I Am the Night, the season finale of Vikings, and Netflix’s Russian Doll on the docket, what will next week look like? All will be revealed Monday, February 4th!

DID YOU KNOW? Kingdom isn’t the first Netflix foreign language original to top one our reports. In 2018, Spanish series, Elite, topped the Binge Report for several weeks and Danish drama, The Rain was the one to watch last May on our Anticipation Report.
