SHOWS ON THE RISE: Foreign Language Series Make Their Presence Known

French series "Osmosis" rose to the top of our "Shows on the Rise" report. Netflix

This week’s “Shows on the Rise” report represents a very diverse and modern look at the current state of TV. With four foreign language shows in the top 10, there appears to be something for everyone to sink their teeth into no matter where you come from. Up first is French science-fiction entry Osmosis sitting pretty at No. 1. In the vein of Black Mirror, the show is set in a future where a dating app matches people with their soulmates based on brain data. Meanwhile, over on Amazon’s Prime Video service, recent entry Hanna (No. 2) nets the silver. Based on the feature film of the same name, the show has now dropped in its entirety. Rounding out the rest of Netflix’s entries are the recent premieres of Season 3 of Santa Clarita Diet (No. 3), Season 2 of On My Block (No. 4), and the recent debut of Brazilian period drama Most Beautiful Thing (No. 8).

On the linear TV front, the return of Masterchef Brazil (No. 5) made an impact on global audiences, while the final season of Into the Badlands (No. 6) on AMC resonated, and Italian audiences celebrated the weekend by staying inside and watching new episodes of Season 4 of Gomorrah (No. 7). Lastly, Jane the Virgin (No. 10) rang in its final season and the payoff of a hotly anticipated cliffhanger with its Season 5 premiere.

With all sorts of event programming on the horizon, will it be The Twilight Zone on CBS All Access, the second season of Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger on Freeform, or BBC America’s Killing Eve that rises to the top of next week’s report? We will reveal it all next Monday.

DID YOU KNOW? Family Guy, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, is sitting at No. 16 on our report. The show is still gaining viewership in its 17th season and is closing in at 1M followers in the TV Time app.
