Monsignor Augustin Renard (John Thaw) returns to his home town St Josse, Picardy, in May 1940, after 20 years spent in Spain. He arrives just as the German occupying forces are arriving. He must lead the parish and keep the community safe from the invaders, while dealing with the resentments his long absence have created with his family and former friends.
