Around the end of the Edo period, Makino Mantaro was born into a wealthy family that runs a sake brewery in Kochi. Due to his weak body, Mantaro was often bullied but he showed huge interest and talent in plants. He decided to drop out of elementary school and studied botany with the dream of "discovering all the plants in Japan" and create his own botanical illustration book.
