Shortly after the end of the war, in May 1945, Lieutenant Mareš returned to Prague with his unit. She is looking forward to meeting her family, fiancée and friends. His colleague, Sergeant Stáňa, loves him and is afraid that she will lose him in the new environment. Mareš visits old Mrs. Stachová, but she doesn't have the strength to tell her that her son has fallen. He gradually learns that his fiancée is already married, his mother and sister have been arrested and shot, and his former friends are dead or have disappeared in the midst of war. He finds only an old professor who did not leave his basement apartment for five years so that he would not have to meet the Germans. Stáňa is disappointed that Mareš forgot their friendship and left her alone on the first day in Prague. In the evening, they both meet at the hotel where they are staying. There is an order to leave for the border. Their relationship is clarified, they both understand the value of their friendship.
