Ratan, a village simpleton, a drunkard with a heart of gold, and his daily travails, including his interactions with the people around him whom he constantly attempts to look after. At the same time, his home sphere is fraught with tension because of the almost daily tussles between his mother and his wife who has been unable to bear children so far. The arrival of a new doctor, who brings with him upheaval in the superstitious and stagnant life of the villagers, sets the stage for an exposition on the duality of the country and the city and their people.
