Maria José is a child from the northeastern backlands who likes to draw and write her name in a notebook. Scolded by her mother, she is forced to put down her writing to help with household chores and “get things done”. The scene is repeated for several generations of women from that family, reflecting a life cycle that represents several “Marias” existing in the country.
