A young peasant woman, Antonina, emigrates to Canada for bread. She stays with her uncle, who proposes marriage, but Antonina does not accept this offer. She marries a farmer from a nearby town, surreptitiously sets aside a penny to a penny and sends her son to Poland to build a house. When her husband finds out about it, he torments her and throws her out. He returns to the country, and what does he find?
