Sutzkever led the Paper Brigade underground movement that saved Jewish books and manuscripts from the Nazis. H survived the Holocaust thanks to Stalin sending a private plane to rescue him. He testified in the Nuremberg Trials and immigrated to Israel in 1947. In Israel, he became the leading figure of Yiddish culture and continued writing with astonishing vitality.
