First years after the establishment of Soviet power in the Donbass. The bandits blow up the bridge over which ore is brought to the blast furnace, the director of the plant is seriously wounded. Mining foreman Ivan Klyavin was unanimously elected by the workers as acting director. In search of the missing train with bread, Klyavin ends up in Petrograd. Here the hero meets Lenin. Back at the plant, Klyavin reads a letter to the workers from the leader of the party. Enemies kill Klyavin, but they are no longer able to prevent the factory workers from successfully overcoming the devastation.
