Helena Bielawska is a talented surgeon, the daughter of a famous pre-war doctor, and a mountaineer. After the war, she finishes medical studies and is employed at Professor Porady's clinic in Łódź. He quickly becomes one of the best specialists in the hospital. After being wrongly accused of murder, she is convicted and sent to prison.
