Olsen Gang is a 14-part Danish crime comedy film series. In the films, produced between 1968 and 1998, a trio of crooks repeatedly tries to get rich with a “big coup” based on the clever plans of their leader, but they always fail for various and often bizarre reasons. The three crooks are portrayed by Ove Sprogøe (as gang leader and namesake Egon Olsen), Morten Grunwald (as Benny Frandsen), and Poul Bundgaard (as Kjeld Jensen). The screenplays were written by Henning Bahs and Erik Balling, with Balling directing all of the films except the final one. The series became a major success in Denmark, Poland, East Germany, and Hungary.
