Follows an easy-going student, Bastian, during the last year of his studies in Munich up to the time when he has to leave town and start making a living as a teacher. Bastian is an amiable and helpful albeit rather irresponsible character. When he visits his grandmother in hospital, he falls for a young female doctor, who even he realizes is way out of his league. Nevertheless, he pursues her with genuine affection and the two have an uneasy affair with all the obstacles one would expect, and a few more.
